Inaugural Event of the “Rethinking Arab Social Movements” series

14 June 2021 @ 18h30 - 20h30

Inaugural Event of the “Rethinking Arab Social Movements” series

The series will showcase results from an ongoing research project on the drivers, character, and aspirations of the ongoing social movements in Algeria, Iraq, Lebanon, and Sudan. The goals are to engage with the global research community and to cross-fertilizing ideas among the various countries research teams. The workshops are held in Arabic, English and French with simultaneous translation to maximize interactions.

Topic: The new protest movements and the renewal of social sciences

Time: Monday, June 14, 2021. 6:30 PM to 8:30PM, Central European time.

The trajectories of the recent social movements in Algeria, Lebanon, Iraq and Sudan seem to differ from those of the Arab spring of 2011. Do these mobilizations require us to renew concepts to analyze “Arab revolutions”? What are the roles of the social sciences, and of the researcher, in the process of social change?

Speakers

Seteney Shami (Arab Council for the Social Sciences): The research, the researcher, and popular revolts

Gilbert Achcar (SOAS): Arab Spring and new mobilization paradigms

Eva Bellin (Brandeis University): Resilient autocracies facing persistent uprisings

Ishac Diwan (Ecole Normale Supérieure, Paris): What is the political economy dynamics of social movements?

Moderator: Amel Boubekeur (EHESS/ISSRA)
