Karima Dirèche

Professor of History and Research Director, the CNRS

Karima Dirèche is a historian, specializing in contemporary Maghreb history. She is the research director at CNRS (Centre national de la recherche scientifique/ National Center for Scientific Research) Telemme, Aix-Marseille. Professor Dirèche is the author of three books and over 40 scientific papers. She has also edited four collective books.

Her research interests include the socio-history and critical analysis of Maghreb historiographies from a colonial and post-colonial perspective. Some of her recent work covers religious minorities in the Maghreb (today’s Catholics, Jews, and neo-evangelicals) and the political and religious controversies they face, the question of Berber identity in its relationship to politics since independence, the question of national historical narratives, and their challenges in the light of Islamist and Berber movements. Professor Dirèche’s methodological approaches combine oral history practices with anthropological surveys using a socio-political analysis.
